Lorenzo Marini comes from a successful career in the advertising field. Among his significant participations are Art Basel Miami Beach in 2016 and the Venice Biennale the following year. Since the early 2000s, he has presented his research to the public, baptizing “Type Art” in 2016 with an exhibition at the Permanente in Milan. This event marked a turning point in experimentation, moving from an initial abstract phase, attentive to material variations and with a limited color range, to a more in-depth analysis of typographic characters. Verbal language had been used by 20th-century art as an external element to be inserted into the painted structure as a distinct semantic structure. Marini elevates the letter to the absolute protagonist role, freeing it from the logic that governs everyday communication and making it an aesthetic subject to be approached for its intrinsic beauty. Thus, he devises fictitious alphabets that submerge themselves into an intuitive game. Within this game, logos and various symbols are chosen according to their formal analogies, enabling the recreation of graphic symbols. Ideograms and signs from the most disparate cultures blend in this anarchic context free from functional obligations. This idea is outlined point by point in the “Manifesto del Movimento per la Liberazione delle Lettere”, which gathers the principles underlying “Type Art”. He pursues joyful research, permeated by the vitality of a new language, unburdened by syntactic rigidity, and applying it across various mediums. Throughout his career, he has created sculptures and installations that delve into the realm of environmental engagement, while keeping a close eye on the latest technological innovations. Colors are now fully embracing their brightness. The days of sticking to monochrome are long gone as tints have become an integral part of the positive and rejuvenating energy of the most recent style. The audience is transported into a sign-filled jungle, which sparks individual imagination. This process leads to reflection, resulting in the creation of new meanings and personalized words.
