BREAKFAST is a creative studio founded in 2009 and based in Brooklyn that is headed by, among others, Andrew Zolty. It produces kinetic artworks, installations, sculptures, and two-dimensional pieces that have travelled the world from New York to Europe, also reaching the East Asia. It is worth mentioning the exhibitions at the Morris Museum in Morris Township, New Jersey and the World Trade Center, New York. The collective pursues evocative research that resides at the intersection of art and science: technologically advanced processes serve as the tool to achieve visually lyrical results. To accomplish this, collaborative experimentation is indispensable, since knowledge and skills from various fields intermingle in service of aesthetic goals. The studio prohibits the use of prefabricated elements and focuses on the conception of individual pieces, specifically tailored to the needs of the moment. An emblematic example is the “brixel,” a sort of brick that can be multiplied to create both small-scale sculptures and monumental installations. Movement is ensured by the computer component, which collects and processes data and then transmits the kinetic impulse to the mechanical apparatus. Thus, the artwork becomes intertwined with measurements from the real world that are difficult to capture –such as the vitality of an urban centre, the rise in sea level, and the force of the wind. The ecological theme is accompanied by interactivity: sensors detect the presence of the audience and respond to their actions, altering the behaviour of the artwork. Participation engages the individual within universal dynamics that no longer overshadow or suppress them but rather welcome them as the protagonist of an existence in constant flux. Thus, a playful aspect is evident, yet this is not only meant to entertain but entails responsibility towards a reality that can finally be experienced, which encompasses and hence does not allow evading the challenges of the contemporary world. The rhythm of nature harmonizes with that of humans, and technology serves as the conduit for this magic.
